Hiking Monastery Malevi - Agios Petros

We’re directed northwest to visit the women's Monastery of Panagia Malevi, a 5 km distance from the village of Agios Petros. It is the most famous monastery of Kynouria, built on the slopes of Mount Parnonas, at an altitude of 950 m amongst a rich forest of rare and protected variety of cedar trees. The name "Malevi" refers to the original location of the Monastery on the highest peak of mount Parnonas, Malevo. Its foundation dates back to 1616 and is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. From the Monastery we will begin our journey through the cedar forest while taking the marked path.

The cedar tree is perhaps the most typical species of the Parnon flora because it is the only area in Europe that we encounter it in pure clusters, 740 acres of region and at an altitude of 800 to 1,000 meters. Its scarcity gives it great ecological and scientific value and is therefore protected by both national and regional legislation.
At the end of the journey, we will board the coach to arrive at the quaint village of Agios Petros, only a few miles away from Malevi. This beautiful village has been built at the foot of mount Parnon and is famous for its picturesque alleys and old and faded inscriptions of another time. The big square which is dominated by the church of St Peter and Paul is also very impressive along with it’s the picturesque shops, which are full of traditional products. Needless to say, this is an area full of chestnut, apple, cherry and plane trees.
